About us

Enabling enlightened philanthropists to actualize their values—and make a difference in the world

Built around the values of tzedakah (righteousness, charity) and tikkun olam (repairing the world), the Foundation works with East Bay Jewish donors to realize their philanthropic goals—and create a rich, supportive, inclusive and strong community.

The Foundation's donor-advised philanthropic funds, supporting family foundations and designated endowment funds contribute to the growth and well-being of people in many communities.

The Foundation's network of enlightened philanthropists, effective nonprofit organizations, skilled professional advisors and experienced community leaders work together to achieve social justice, increased opportunity, continuity of traditions, and a better world for future generations.

Enlightened philanthropy

We combine expertise in planned giving, an understanding of our donors' unique needs, and an eye to excellence in client service as we help donors set charitable objectives—and achieve them.

We ensure that our donors have the financial, estate planning and grantmaking tools to make informed, enlightened decisions that maximize both financial benefits and community impact.

Building community support

We also build community by making grants from the foundation's Permanent Community Endowment to help nonprofit organizations build their capacity to serve the needs of the Jewish community in the East Bay, Israel and overseas.

We work with the Jewish Community Federation of the Greater East Bay to make grants that promote the continuity and richness of Jewish life. And we collaborate with these organizations and their donors to create long-term endowment funds to help meet the needs—present and future—of our people.

Values

Our work is rooted in the values that form the basis of the Jewish tradition:

  • Tikkun Olam (repairing the world): As Jews, it is our charge to repair the world for ourselves and for our children's children.
  • Tzedakah (righteousness, charity): "Doing justly" is the highest ideal in Judaism.
  • The needs of people: We work with donors, organizations, and community leaders, but ultimately our focus is on addressing people's unique needs and improving their quality of life.
  • Inclusiveness: Each part of the community enriches the whole, and we believe in embracing all the people and practices that make our community vibrant and strong.
  • Excellence: We continuously strive to improve our service our donors and to improve the quality of life for everyone in our community.

A legacy in the East Bay and overseas

It has been more than 85 years since a dedicated group of volunteers in Oakland founded the Jewish Welfare Federation as an organized fundraising effort to meet the needs of both the local community and of European Jews. Today, together with the Jewish Community Federation of the Greater East Bay, we continue to increase our impact as we strive to meet the diverse and changing needs of Jews and Jewish communities, here and around the world.
